For this urban design project, I focused on an area along the Distelweg in the north of Amsterdam. The masterplan transforms the existing structure by introducing new waterways, creating a living environment closely connected to the water.
De Noorder Eilanden is designed as a car-free neighborhood, where a new bike lane weaves through the islands and connects the area to major public transportation hubs. The plan emphasizes variation in housing typologies, ranging from affordable homes to private dwellings, ensuring a diverse and inclusive community.
A strong focus lies on collective spaces and community gathering. The design includes three large parks and three spacious plazas, all interconnected through the continuous bike route. The waterfronts are fully accessible to the public, forming a network of cycling and walking paths that link all parts of the neighborhood.
